California's Only Official Dark Sky Community
In July of 2009, the International Dark Sky Association designated Borrego Springs, CA as the second-ever Dark Sky Community (after Flagstaff, AZ), and the first such designation given to a California community.
It took 2.5 years of hard work to demonstrate to the IDA that Borrego Springs is committed to keeping the heavens here visible for all. And the nearby Mt. Palomar and Mt. Laguna astronomical observatories are grateful that we're keeping the sky dark for astronomers and scientists. We're proud of our dark secret! Dark Skies
We mean it – dark like maybe you saw when you were a kid, or the last time you visited the northern Yukon... We can't think of any place in California that's so close to major cities where the Milky Way shines so brightly. Where meteors leave smoky trails behind, and a favorite after-dinner pastime is watching the satellites fly over. Did you know stars come in colors? Come experience it yourself. Dark Surroundings
And while it's important to see the stars and planets, how wonderful it is to see dark right here on earth! No oceans of blazing parking lots, no car dealerships, no security lights everywhere you look. True darkness – just like it's supposed to be at night! You've got to experience it to believe it. California's Secret Desert™ is one dark, quiet place – we love it!
